The dog tries hard to show its tenacity, hoping for help from kind-hearted strangers, but only attracts curious glances from passersby. When it finds a puddle of dirty water, it quickly drinks a few sips, not knowing when it will find water again. Cautiously, it watches the people come and go. A leashed dog with an owner curiously observes it, and it looks back with envy, yet ultimately remains alone in its lonely spot.
Although it appears strong, it is actually quite timid. When a passerby calls out to it, it trembles in fear. Even when a kind lady offers it food, it hesitates to stop, continuing to strive for attention. Perhaps it desires more than just a bite to eat; as it watches the crowd, it seems to be waiting for its owner, searching for its home. Unable to find either, it can only wait in silence.
The dog is well-behaved and understanding. When someone reaches out to pet it, it doesn’t resist at all. Occasionally, passersby stop, perhaps touched by the spirit of this resilient little dog. Yet, in this vast city, it feels like it has no place of its own. Sometimes, people toss it scraps, but a mere morsel doesn’t seem to be what it truly seeks.
It continually tries to showcase its strength while silently enduring the hardships of life. When Johnny received a call for help about the stray dog, he was deeply moved and rushed to its location. Although the dog’s hind legs were paralyzed and it couldn’t run freely like other dogs, it persisted in trying to survive in this complicated world.
When Johnny examined its injuries, the dog wouldn’t allow him to touch it; even the slightest contact caused it pain. Its eyes were filled with sadness and helplessness, and every movement seemed incredibly difficult. Johnny decided to first calm the dog down and leave the examination to the vet. He was inspired by its will to live and strength, and resolved to help it no matter how challenging it might be.
At the veterinary clinic, the vet discovered that the area around the dog’s hind legs was beginning to rot, oozing pus, yet the dog continued to wag its tail, trying to please. Seeing the dog’s eyes was heart-wrenching. The vet immediately began to examine it. As the vet assessed the injuries, he explained to Johnny that the dog’s legs could not straighten, and both hind legs were curled up.
It was in so much pain that it screamed if touched, and the area around its belly was completely rotting away. The vet took X-rays and explained that the dog’s knee joints, along with the femur and tibia forming those joints, had completely deteriorated and were infected. Therefore, there was no value in treating its hind legs.
This damage was likely caused by a car accident, resulting in a misaligned growth of the bones. According to the X-rays and the dog’s overall condition, the vet estimated that the injuries had existed for at least six months, indicating it was not a recent issue. The dog had developed a habit of walking on its front legs, which takes time to adjust to.
Given the current warm weather, the risk of infection was high, and if it spread to the healthier areas, it could lead to sepsis, severely impacting the dog’s health. The dog’s hind legs had become a burden, and the vet recommended amputating them, after which it could be fitted with a wheelchair since it could still support itself on its front legs.
Johnny arranged for this poor creature to be hospitalized and prepared for surgery the next day. The vet began the pre-operative preparations, hoping that the surgery would go smoothly. The next day, the poor creature paced anxiously in front of the surgery room. Johnny was uncertain about what would happen next; perhaps once it went in, it would be a lifetime change.
He couldn’t know what the dog was thinking in that moment, but its eyes were calm and determined, exuding a serene strength. However, watching it enter the operating room made Johnny uneasy, and he silently wished for it to hold on, knowing it was stronger than any dog he had ever encountered. After more than two hours, the surgery was successfully completed, and Johnny finally felt a weight lift from his heart.
The dog had survived but had permanently lost its hind legs. Johnny worried about how it would adapt to life without them, fearing it might lose its balance and be unable to walk as it once did. When the dog woke up, the effects of the anesthesia began to wear off, causing it to struggle in its cage from the pain, yet it remained calm and resilient. Despite the discomfort, it circled the cage in distress.
Johnny anxiously asked the vet multiple times about this behavior, and the vet explained that it was a normal reaction after anesthesia. All Johnny could do was hope time would pass quickly, allowing the dog to suffer less. This strong creature endured the pain without making a sound, and all Johnny could do was make its bedding a little thicker to provide some comfort.
On the third day, fully aware and awake, the dog wagged its tail upon seeing Johnny. Though it couldn’t speak, it seemed to understand everything. Its spirits were much improved; it was able to eat and drink heartily. After satisfying its hunger and thirst, it bravely walked around on its front legs, as if to show Johnny that it was doing better.
When Johnny took it out to relieve itself, the considerate dog still refused to go inside the room. During these few days together, Johnny discovered that the dog was very affectionate and well-behaved, making him grow fonder of it. Perhaps due to its long period of wandering, it lacked a sense of security and often leaned in for Johnny to pet its head.
Maybe such touches provided it with a sense of comfort. Its physical and mental conditions improved remarkably, and for the first time, it showed a happy smile. Seeing that smile, Johnny felt a deep admiration for its strength. After a week of treatment, the dog was ready to be discharged. With the weather being so hot, Johnny decided to let it stay in the same room with him to prevent its wounds from getting infected.
The dog had become a bit picky with food, which Johnny found endearing. The white dog often bullied it, but it always maintained a simple and honest demeanor. Its obedient behavior made Johnny feel even more affectionate towards it. It never fought or caused a ruckus; it was truly understanding. As the two dogs spent time together, Johnny felt like they were developing a special bond, as if they were falling in love.
On the fifteenth day, the dog unfortunately caught a cold. Worried about its health, Johnny quickly took it to the vet for a check-up. After collecting a blood sample, the vet’s first instinct was that it was anemic. While waiting for the results, Johnny stayed by its side, and the dog seemed like a love-starved child, afraid that the adult would walk away.
Whenever Johnny turned his back, it would run to a nearby young woman, but as soon as Johnny appeared, it would rush back to him, fearing abandonment. When the test results came back, the report showed anemia and a moderate infection, neither of which were major issues. Once home, Johnny promptly gave it its medication. At that point, the dog was quite weak and trembled even while trying to walk.
Johnny shared with me that he had been rescuing stray dogs for over three years and had helped many, but this dog’s will to survive amazed him. He promised to continue caring for this resilient pup.
